Each year since 2013, Orphan barrel release an extremely limited bottling of Rhetoric, the aim being to see how each incremental year changes the character of the whiskey. The Rhetoric 23 is the fourth expression of the same whisky. Set up in 2011, the Orphan Barrel Whiskey Distilling Company began as an endeavor ,to rescue these nearly forgotten barrels of whiskey and share them with a discerning audience. Over time whiskey companies come and go, distilleries are bought and sold, and some barrels h slip through the production net - in a sense, they become 'orphan' barrels.
It is the product of dark quiet corners in old rickhouses, distilleries changing hands, and a firm desire to unearth some really special whiskey. It tells a story of an industry which boomed in the 19th century, endured 13 years of prohibition, and is now enjoying a second golden age. The Orphan Barrel Rhetoric 23 is a narration of the American Whiskey Journey. Whiskey tends to be different from other spirits, in that there’s often an intriguing tale or illustrious history behind the bottle, the brand or both.
One of the things I like to think about when I pour a measure of whiskey, is the story that ’s gone into making my drink. As for Orphan Barrel Forged Oak, which is the focus of this review, this straight Kentucky bourbon spent 15 years in barrels in the Stizler-Weller rickhouses. I have saved it for the last in this batch, my reward to keep me pushing towards that finish line, however arbitrary it is, as there is always more to sample.Īs you may remember, I loved the Rhetoric by Orphan Barrel. I received the sample bottle from my editor for this review a few more weeks ago than I care to admit, as I would then be past my due date for this article. Every now again there is a whiskey that comes up that is on my “must try” list. Ok, I have been sampling whiskey for some time now, and I have gotten to know exactly what I like and dislike, but I still enjoy pushing my experiences in new directions the road less traveled theory.
